Notable patterns in Ranma/Sailor Moon fan fiction:

Ranma turns out to be the Senshi of a new planet. (Sun, Earth, a Jovian moon)
Ranma has a romantic relation with one of the Senshi. (Mercury, Mars, sometimes Jupiter)
Ranma is related to Sailors Mercury, Mars or Moon
Ranma moves to Juuban after the death of Akane or Genma.
The transformational magic gives a small degree of control over his curse.
Common starting points are before and after Sailor Moon S, and shortly after the end of Sailor Moon.
Almost never starts in the middle of Ranma 1/2, always before or shortly after (by a few years, tops).
Ranma trains Hotaru (and/or others) in martial arts for health reasons.
Most of them start with a letter in the first half of the alphabet. :)

The purpose of these patterns is not to say, "This crossover is good, and this crossover is bad" or for me to be able to "get" anyone or any story.

When I had my original idea for Child of Love, Children of Hate, I had little more than a kernel of an idea. Ranma and Akane help the Senshi and censored is the enemy. Ohh-kay. Until the very end, that would seem about as original as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to most people. So I figure "Jay, if you want to do something original, you need to see what has been done." This led to me going out and investigating all the Ranma / Sailor Moon fan fiction I could find.

Then I read it all. Repeatedly. Then I read all the really good stuff until I can recite the lines. That taken care of, I started thinking about the patterns. The above list is what I came up with (plus suggestions given to me by some people on the FFML).
