  Agyar (254 pages)

Fascinatingly enough, Agyar is about a vampire, but it never once uses the word 'vampire' or any variation, or anything which even insinuates vampiracy. At all. Pretty neat trick, eh? Initially, I was going to call it a vampire novel. But it isn't, really. In a vampire novel, you expect supernatural powers to take center stage in the telling. (See Laurell K Hamilton. Ugh.) That isn't the case, here.

Agyar tells the story of one Jack Agyar who has been called to a dreary college town in Ohio by his sire. Apparently his sire has been up to something, and wants Jack to take the fall for it. Initially, Jack is OK with this, as he knows he can't resist his sire. As the novel progresses, Jack decides he'd rather not go quietly into the night. (Or is that 'day'?)

The whole story is presented as things that have been typed (by Jack) on an old typewriter he has found. It makes for a nice device, as entire days can pass between paragraphs, as Jack becomes distracted and has to return to his typing at a later date.

War For The Oaks (332 pages)

The premise here is that the Seelie and Unseelie Courts ('Good' and 'Evil' fairies) have decided to have a little fight. Problem is, they're all quite immortal and under normal circumstances, cannot die. Solution? Find themselves a mortal and stick him or her on the battle field like a magical chess piece. The Seelie choose a musician, who'd rather not be chosen.

Ok, I liked the book, but I probably would've liked it a whole lot more if I got all the music and rock references. At one point, the aforementioned musician puts out an ad looking to hire some other musicians. Part of the ad text includes the warning 'no metal'. Well. I'm metal. My only exposure to 70's or 80's rock is Blue Öyster Cult, which isn't exactly quite as mainstream as the crowd being addressed here.

Further, the plot uses the captured-falls-for-captor and young-woman-outsmarts-ancient-evils clichés. I can't actually come up with anything good to say. Which is depressing, because I liked the book! Oh well.

 Fantasy pseudo-Rome

  Furies of Calderon (440 pages)

As per the series-description, the story takes place in a sort of fantasy pseudo-Rome, wherein almost everyone has the ability (to a greater or lesser extent) to summon elemental beings called "furies". The nation is ruled by the First Lord, with the support of the High Lords, and a Senate. This first book introduces the plot to overthrow the First Lord. Fortunately, a spunky Cursor (messenger/spy) fresh out of the Academy, and fresh from being betrayed by her mentor, is there to save the day!

Not half as original as The Dresden Files. Not fractionally as compelling. The characters are terribly flat, and the plot "twists" are more like gentle turns in the road that we can see from a mile away. I don't think any character was presented with any moral dilemmas. The character development consists of: The feckless youth learns the importance of responsibility, and the evil woman does something nice. Gee.

  Academ's Fury (480 pages)

Writing was a bit better in this one, but it seemed like there was somewhat less story to fill up all the words.

  Cursor's Fury (442 pages)
Ok, now we're starting to get somewhere. Moral dilemma, characters of interest, plot twists, excitement. It took me six months or something to get around to reading this from the time I bought it. It won't take me nearly so long to read the next one.

While the series kept me awake and reading far, far too late on work nights, I found myself sort of disappointed that was seemed to be billed as a sort of plain fantasy with a smidge of magic slowly developed this overtones of young-boy-saves-the-world. Yawn. And it left itself nicely set up for the sequel series.

Oh, the boring, flat characters. If the book hadn't been told in the first person, I don't think I would've even been able to keep track of the main character. The whole nature of the Special Forces is utterly at odds with the supposed justification for only recruiting the elderly. Things moved along, at least; it only took me about 4 hours to finish reading. Fair sized print, with what seems to be a suspicious amount of space between the lines.

  The Prodigal Sun (400 pages)
  The Dying Light (393 pages)
  A Dark Imbalance (363 pages)
With an ending like that, I'm not surprised all the copies you find are remaindered.

The Last Guardian of Everness (324 pages)
I fail to see how anyone can claim this series is a parody of "normal" fantasy. If this is parody, then surely Gaiman is some sort of farce. Rather, Everness is simply Very Different. In what I find to be an entirely positive way.
The Mists of Everness (347 pages)
Hmm, perhaps not as good as the first, but still entirely enjoyable. I fail to understand the comments of others regarding any heavy handed political commentary.
